On the Air – Peter Gabriel (1978)

Every night I’m back at the shack
I’m sure no one else is there
I’m putting the aerial up
So I can go out on the air
— Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel

I’ve been working on the station’s music scheduling/playlists. With such a diverse library there’s a lot of juggling when setting up different rotations that flow from one genre to another and having it sound right, some things just don’t work together. A lot of it is just experimenting and then listening back and seeing what works and what doesn’t.

I added new rotations over the weekend and have been fine tuning it over the week. Set it up the tentative schedule last night. I thought it sounded great. Still tweaking it here and there but I’m happy with it as it stands.

This morning I looked at the stats and all my listeners were gone.
Current listeners 0, they had all dropped off.
Haven’t had 0 listeners in the middle of the week in years.

After about 10 minutes I started getting some listeners but they weren’t the same ones.

I normally listen to the station from my computer, before it goes out streaming. When I want to crank it I listen to the online stream on the home stereo.

I was listening on the stereo, music was flowing and I was really wondering what happened – the new rotations do sound great, what was going on?

Then I got knocked off, lost the stream. Went back to the computer and the other listeners got knocked off too. 0 listeners again.

Apparently we’re having technical issues.

I don’t remember – Peter Gabriel (1980)

I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything
Anything at all
— Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel Video

This is getting to be a clusterfuck. I still have a lot of media to sell but anything in under $10 or so is unprofitable because of shipping costs. The vast majority of my media falls into this category. What you’re seeing in the store is the top 5%.

After the hiccup with the cassettes, I moved on to a box of blue-rays. They’re in good condition but I found most of the titles aren’t worth enough to list.

I’ve spent the last week going through the rest of the DVDs I’ve had stored, trying to estimate prices and am seeing cents not dollars. Just heard that Best Buy has stopped carrying DVDs in their stores, I imagine they’ll be liquidating their inventory of new movies which will add to the glut.

I keep forgetting the plan –  selling DVDs is only a beginning to learn the basics of selling online, I’m going to be putting some lots together to sell locally but most of the DVDs will be either added to my personal library or going back in storage as it’s just silly to sell them right now.

Music Submissions

ZZ Top – I heard it on the X – Gruene Hall, New Bruanfels Texas (2019)

At the station, I get way too many emails with irrelevant music submissions mixed in with a large amount of “business opportunities”, website crap, fake invoices, and people who claim to have incriminating videos of me.

If you are using one of these ridiculous music submission services, you probably aren’t reading this. On the other hand, if you are an artist that wants me to take a look at some of your music – in your submission put the subject in the following format:
NTRadio Music Submission – Artist/Band name

I personally wouldn’t recommend paying a music submission service that sends unsolicited, mass-mailed music requests. You’re wasting your money. It’s not just me, most stations probably just ignore them. They’re a waste of time. In my case, even if I played it, it wouldn’t increase your exposure. My station is a niche station. While I don’t have a ton of listeners, the average time that my listeners stay connected puts the major stations’ averages to shame.

For personal submissions, it’s all about the music.

If I choose to add your music to the NTR playlist, I’ll let you know. If I don’t get back to you, please don’t take it personally.

Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me

And tomorrow, today will be yesterday

Ring out the old, ring in the new
Ring out the false, ring in the true
